Is government becoming too involved in our clothes?
I came across this new law that some states are passing restricting people from wearing their pants in a manner called ‘saggin’. Some states are making this a misdemeanor offense and will actually issue a fine to the perpetrator. One state is saying they will issue jail time up to six months and a $500 fine for underwear exposure! They are saying pull up or pay up! Others want to issue a fine and community service.
And this brings me to women’s low rider jeans. Some of the laws state that the pant line is not to be more than 2 inches below the waste. Well what about those pants that are just built that way! Not everyone’s waist is in the same spot as we are NOT all created equal. I personally have a high waist, defining waist by the smallest point of the mid-section. For me, that is above my belly button. Personally, I can’t stand to have pants that wear that high up on me. And most all of my jeans are low riders. This is my personal preference! I don’t go around telling people they have to lower their pant line why should I be made to raise mine?
Now, that said. I do feel that those men that walk around with their entire rear hanging out only covered by a pair of boxer shorts is ridiculous. But that’s me. I simply laugh and roll my eyes, but do I feel they deserve to pay a fine? No, not really. Unless, of course, something inappropriate were to pop out, then definitely fine them.
If we’re going to make laws about pants too low then what about shorts too high? Or crop top shirts baring too much midriff? Next thing you know we’ll all be forced to wear uniforms just to go to the market! I for one am not looking forward to that day.
Let’s think about this. Seriously. I realize there should be some laws stating that yes, when we go outside we must have our clothes on. But honestly, who is being hurt by seeing someone’s Hanes logo on their skivvies? I can understand dress codes in schools and such but are we taking this too far by taking it to our streets?

…ohman…i would definitely get slapped with a fine…i don’t ride my pants low on purpose, they just seem to end up that way…(I do wear nice undies though
)
love yer site!
SHorts too high? That SHOULD be jail time!
Amber, sadly I think these laws are actually based on a racist notion. They have to do mostly with urban men/boys of color and giving law enforcement more tools with which to control them. They seem like novel attempts at curfew laws that are meant to keep “trouble-making kids” off the street.
I don’t think the laws are coming from a puritanical dress perspective, so wouldn’t worry too much about the cropped shirts going anywhere soon.
To be honest, I would have to agree with you. I still don’t believe it makes it right. If we can’t get these kids for the disturbances they are causing, then I see this as a sad attempt at crowd control.
Oh I don’t think it makes it right, I think it makes it extra wrong. It is shocking to me that these types of laws can get passed at all. These kids for the most part aren’t disturbing anything except for people’s racist notions about what their towns should look like.
Exactly! Well said! I couldn’t have said it better myself
Isn’t it strange how they want to fine the kids for showing an inch of underwear but the “celebrities” can dawn the red carpet showing 12 inches of EVERYTHING and that’s considered glamorous and fashionable? What exactly are we trying to teach our youth with such double standards? Go figure!
