I’m not sure what to say! I came across this post by SingleWAHM.
Can you imagine going through the drive-thru and being refused service because you have a disability?
Well that’s exactly what happened to Karen Putz when she went through the Steak & Shake drive-thru! The person at the window refused to take her order because she wouldn’t use the speaker. Umm, hello? She just told you she can’t hear you through the speaker! Does being incapable of using the speaker because of being deaf mean she should be denied the right to have a shake for her and her kids? Absolutely not! To read more go to Standing Up for a Friend & a Fellow Mom Blogger! I’m disgusted with her treatment!
I encourage you to join me helping to spread the word! I personally refuse to eat at any of our local restaurants until they have given her a sincere apology!
I can’t imagine what this kind of treatment would be like, but I can say this: Discrimination of any kind is an injustice to all society as a whole and I won’t stand for it!
Also, Karen’s original post can be found here Steak and Shake Denies Service.
It’s that time of year again where flower, card, candy, and stuffed toy makers go nuts. Yes, I’m talking about Valentine’s Day. The day when all lovers are encouraged to openly express their love for one another! Honestly, people, come on! Do we need a designated day to tell someone you love them? I’m not saying its not a sweet thought and a nice gesture, but do you really need to spend an entire paycheck or even take out a loan to say, “I love you”?
I love to get presents! I love to get flowers! I think they smell wonderful and they are absolutely beautiful as a centerpiece. And, yes, they give me that special feeling that someone is thinking of me. Do I need an entire day dedicated to it? No, not really. I would prefer to get them on any other day for simply no reason other than they wanted to. But definitely not because my significant other felt they had to because of some huge overly commercialized holiday. To me, you can show so much more love without spending so much in cash!
What’s the basis for Valentine’s Day, anyway? Historically, there were many St. Valentine’s that can be linked to the holiday, but strangely not one of the St. Valentine’s that are linked to the history of the holiday had a whole lot to do with romance, except with the mention of a possible farewell message written by one St. Valentine, to his beloved before his execution which took place on February 14th in either 269 A.D. or 270 A.D., but instead they were martyrs for their beliefs in the Catholic Church.
Another possible link to the February holiday is the pagan festival of Lupercalia. This festival was in honor of the She-Wolf that suckled Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome. The festival had links to fertility and easing the pain in childbirth as well as other beliefs not mentioned here. The Luperci (brotherhood of the wolf) ran the festival beginning with a sacrifice of two male goats and one dog, ending with a nude run through the streets smacking women with thongs cut from the skins of the sacrificial animals. Doesn’t sound too romantic to me!
There’s other speculation to the day being referred to by Chaucer. But honestly, Valentine’s Day as we know it today, comes down to this, in the 1840’s Valentine’s Day was reinvented by a man named Leigh Eric Schmidt. Later in 1847, Esther Howland, mass-produced paper lace embossed valentine’s and sold them in her father’s book and stationary store. And thus we have today’s traditional valentine card, but can we do anything simple? Of course, not! Which is why Valentine’s Day is now a multi-billion dollar market!
So, in the spirit of the holiday, go get the one you love (or just like) and treat them to something special, but realize its because you want to not because some historically significant event of love happened on this day and you need to honor it.
Some good ideas are the traditional card, box of chocolates, and flowers. Oh yeah, and you cant’ go wrong with jewelry right
A few new ideas? What about treating her/him to a relaxing bath, or a weekend get-away? What are the interests of your special someone? Get them a good book to read! Or a subscription to their favorite magazine. Take them to some place special. There’s so much that you can do without spending a wad of cash.
Remember, show more, spend less
Free sample! Free video game system! Free credit line! Free this! Free that!
How many of these offers are truly free? I know from personal experience that many of these offers are on an ‘if’ basis. Most ask you to complete such and offer, then another, then another, etc., etc., until you’ve spent so much time and money on the offers that ‘free’ gift costs more than it would have had you just gone to the store and bought it yourself.
Then we’ve got the survey ones. These really aren’t that bad as lo0ng as you have the time to fill out the survey, but don’t forget to uncheck the box giving them permission to share your information with other advertisers and offers. Unless, of course, you want them too
Free credit line is the one that gets me to laughing the most! It should be called free debt line :S These offers have insane APR%, annual fees, membership fees, one-time startup fees, fees, fees, and more fees! By the time you get your card it’s already maxed out! And the best part? Some aren’t even a major credit card. Many require that you shop with them strictly from their catalogs. They’re not all like this, but be sure to read the fine print!
A few good free sites?
If you know of anymore, I’d love to hear about them!
Happy freebie-ing!
Oh the shock! The horror! I couldn’t believe my ears…. erm, eyes… as I read this news report. In this news report it states that the woman had two metal pipes in her purse as well. The woman identified herself as, Tina Williams.
I mean, come on, I like my fun time too, but at the expense of my children?!? I think not! The thing that upsets me the most is I fully believe she’s getting off easy and deserves many more charges not listed. Such as, being charged for paraphernalia, driving while ignorant, and I’m sure we can think of many others she would fall under the category of.
There’s no excuse for this kind of irresponsibility, but I doubt she will be punished to the full extent of the law. What could have been going through her head to physically reach over, grab the seatbelt restraint, click it into the buckle, and totally disregard the child in the back seat? Did she get the two confused one for the other? I’m totally appalled by the ignorance of people in society these days. I’ve seen children taken away from their mother for a lot less! For things that were completely asinine, and yet people with serious neglect issues end up getting away with them! I fully believe this is not the first time this has happened with this woman, and I doubt it will be the last. Its a rare case that someone gets caught the very first time they mess up. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, but in this particular instance, I seriously doubt this was the first time this woman has done something like this.
And just think of how many other instances of cases like this are out there that we don’t even hear about! Is anyone really safe on the roads anymore?
While in my never-ending search of learning what blogging is all about and what would be good to blog about I came across this blogger’s site who is apparently the guru of blogging in the blogger world. I found it all quite helpful and very interesting. I invite you to check it out (if you haven’t already) and tell me what you think.
His post about Facebook has really got me thinking! It is so scary to think that anyone could access that much information out of us without our knowledge. In fact, it makes me wonder just how many tidbits of info are really floating around out there and just how easy are they to come across. When a site, or what ever, says your information is secure, how do you know? I mean REALLY know just how secure it is? Isn’t it said some where that once its on the net its on the net forever? Honestly, even if you post something on someone else how far does that information go? I’ve had things said about me that I was later questioned on and totally blind sided by the experience! I had no idea anything was even being said about me!
The video he’s linked in the post was interesting to watch but unfortunately for me this stupid computer doesn’t have sound so I was unable to hear if there was any dialog to go with the picture and I’m sure there was. If anyone wants to let me know what it said I’d be much appreciative
I guess my thoughts on all of this are like this:
If you don’t care and have nothing to hide, then more power to you, but be respectful of what you say and how you say it. The internet is the biggest gossip and information network out there. Use it wisely!
